Re: Ok I finally did it...bought some food preps

Water....none. :( I was at Costco and after paying for what I bought, I grabbed a bite to eat at their food court. As I was munching on my food, I noticed a guy with a case of bottled water and remembered that I haven't prepped for that yet. So that's a huge one that is on my list.

That dog/cat food doubles up for people food if necessary.

I just bought a book on edible wild plants. Might be a good idea to have one around for your region... just in case.

Awesome start. I'm headed out tomorrow just to top off both cars with gas, pick up 10 cases of water, and enough canned goods to top off what I have eaten in the last 3 months.

Dried beans like pintos and whites, noodles store well.
Veggie oil
led flashlight and batteries or crank light
Minute rice like uncle Bens stores well and cooks fast....less energy
Powdered whole milk like NIDO you can find at Wal Mart made by nestles
Honey last forever really.....and has many uses
Get some treats sugar candy peppermints and like....last along time and lift spirits....get some BOOZE also good for barter even if you don't drink
A good medical kit with antibiotics....learn to make your own colloidal silver while you at it
Lots of good canning info here as well
DUDE, you can learn a lot hanging around these folks :applause_

You might wanna get some instant gravy mix for all them instant taters....even if you do know how to make your own, you never know if you'll have the fixins, sausage, meat drippins etc.

I mill my own flower and make my own bread , pancakes and what not so I keep red and white wheat, a few hundred lbs. of each (whole) then grind when needed ( they will keep for 30yrs or more), I use the electric Nutrimill for everyday, costs a little over a $100.00 and works like a champ. For when TSHTF a hand crank model that you can hook to a bike and pedal, turn by hand or rig to electric motor like the Country living grain mill is an excellent choice, but they are pricey at just under $400.00......they are built to last and with a couple spare parts that they will sell you they'll last forever. However for every day use the NUTRIMILL is hard to beat ....as long as you have power.

frugal squirrel and others carry the country living mill

I'm sure it does, mines still packed away....someday.

I just mention the Nutrimill cuz it works great and costs a lot less , it won't grind corn and some of the stuff CLM will, not built as tough as CLM either.....but still Nutrimill is a very handy machine and should last a long time.

Brita pitchers are good if you are using tap water, will get rid of chlorine/ fluoride and some chemicals... it is not for purifying creek water.
You need something with a sub 2 micron ceramic filter.

Re: Ok I finally did it...bought some food preps

Should work for rain barrel water no? I figured I'd have to boil the creek water.

I'll check out the sub 2 micron ceramic filters. Thanks

How would one keep the honey from crystallizing? I can't keep honey for more than 5 years. I know they supposedly find tombs containing 1000 year old honey... I always assumed they omitted the part about it being a 1000 year old brick of sugar.

Stick the jar in hot water.....it will turn back to liquid honey.

Good decision. I'm only a month into doing food preps and I'm really hoping things hold together for a while longer.

I'm adding oxygen absorbers to some quart jars and vacuuming them tonight. Well I have to take a break for a while 'cause the wife and kids are watching "Speed Racer" and I'm making too much noise for them with the food saver :(

So I figure I'll browse GIM instead :)

Re: Ok I finally did it...bought some food preps

Figured it was time for an update and maybe some advice from those with significant others. About a week ago, I was making dinner for myself and the g/f and asked her what she wanted to do for vegetables. She said "let's open one of the cans of corn since you bought a bunch of it". I looked at her and said "no, those items are for when things get messy and we can't get food cheap or at all". Her reply was "oh yeah, I knew that".

Fast forward to today and we are leaving the house to run an errand. I notice one of the boxes was opened and I asked her if she knew what was up. She said she was in the mood for one of the cans of food so she broke it open. I reminded her again that those items were for emergency only. This time I had a little more serious tone to my voice and she got a bit defensive saying "it's only one can". My response to her was that it's just like a savings account. I said you defeat the whole purpose of it by dipping into it.

If she doesnt get the message this time, I am taking those preps I bought and hiding them, even if it means I go rent a storage shed somewhere in town. She needs to understand the seriousness of what's happening in our economy and despite my many mentionings of stuff happening, and reminders "I told you so" I still think she doesn't see just how bad things are all. She may even think I am paranoid but not telling me.

Anyway, any advice on what to do to make sure I get her on the same page?

Easier to get another GF! Do you really want to be with someone who doesn't get in when:fan: Wolves and sheep never mix! You're a GIM wolf! Seek an alpha female. Sorry to be brutal! If you're in love I guess you have to keep her.

Re: Ok I finally did it...bought some food preps

If it's canned food it's not a big deal ....it's good to rotate your stock onto the table or into the pot/pan anyway.
After dinner use your pimp hand on her.....they like that.

buff01 10-06-2008 02:09 AM

Re: Ok I finally did it...bought some food preps

You should be rotating the canned food anyway. When you use some, go buy some more the next time you're at the store.

Tn...Andy 10-06-2008 05:51 AM

Re: Ok I finally did it...bought some food preps

Yep, I agree.....you need to be rotating and using cans goods as part of a long term program. Put a list on the fridge and when you use ANYTHING, put it on the list for re-buying next time you go to the store.

Re: Ok I finally did it...bought some food preps

I agree that eating preps is good practice. For every can you eat buy 2 more to replace it.

Sounds like a good compromise for this relationship, anyway.

Actually, you're missing a good opportunity to get her on the same page. My husband thinks we're all nuts, but he's okay with the food storage now because he quickly learned how great it is to almost never run out of anything. No more last-minute dashes to the grocery store for that one essential, but missing, ingredient. Now he buys food for it on his own, even though he doesn't think a SHTF situation will happen, and he replenishes what he takes out of it. The food needs to be rotated anyway.

Hang a dry erase board over your food storage and get her to write down whatever she uses from it so that it can be quickly replaced. That way, she sees the benefit of having food storage, and you see the benefit of having a girlfriend who isn't fighting you on having food storage.

Some great responses....thanks everyone. I wasn't extremely mad or anything, just irritated. I like the idea of making the list as stuff is used so that we make sure to replace it, but with more!

Have you seen one of these?

The WAPI is a water pasteurization indicator. Works really well with solar cookers. And it's cheap, too.
